The Wayfaring Stranger is a well-known American folk and gospel song likely originating in the early 19th century about a plaintive soul on the journey through life.
Andy Scott writes “This is a tune that I have played many times and improvised around, and then which I arranged for John Helliwell (with string quartet and Hammond organ) for his album ‘Ever Open Door’ (Challenge Records). The reharmonisation that I used for this arrangement seemed transferable to me for saxophone ensemble, whilst utilising some of the timbral and dynamic possibilities that this ensemble possesses.”
