BIG RED is scored for twelve saxophones - soprano doubling sopranino, two sopranos, three altos, three tenors, two baritones and bass.
There are two alternative parts, soprano saxophone part replacing the sopranino sax part. Plus an alternate baritone part replacing the bass saxophone part.
The intention of this piece is two-fold; to explore the homogeneity of the saxophone family, building in waves from an opening solo alto saxophone statement, to a massed saxophone climax heralded by the introduction of the sopranino saxophone, and secondly, to allow the saxophones to breathe and sing, without having to worry about lots of notes! The piece ends calmly, defragmenting the opening statement before coming to rest.
