The beginning and ending sections of the piece requires part of the ensemble to blow through their instruments to imitate the sound of wind. Players can stagger breath as needed to keep the sound going, but there should not be any gaps in the sound. Dynamics of the wind noises for each part is indicated in the score. Pitch of the wind noises is only approximate and is there to indicate that the pitch of the noise should be subtly rising and falling throughout. Solo part: Improvising solo for any saxophone, from bar 157 to end using scales indicated.
‘Gravity Dreams’ is a piece for saxophone ensemble named after an L.E. Modesitt book of the same name. A ‘theme and variation’ of an earlier, more complex piece, ‘The Octagonal Raven’, also for saxophone ensemble, ‘Gravity Dreams’ was written specifically for the inaugural ‘Rite of Passage’ saxophone concert at the Western Australia Academy of Performing Arts in 2013. This event brought together local high school and university saxophone students in a massed saxophone ensemble to perform works by local and international composers written specifically for the event. ‘Gravity Dreams’ was written to explore several different styles throughout its length, including driving, but buoyant martial themes; rapid 6/8 sections with whimsical turns and urgent delivery; and is bookended by two sections of music that call for part of the ensemble to imitate the sounds of wind over a gentle, chorale-like refrain, giving contrast to the main themes explored in the body of the piece.
