'Don't Shoot the Duck' was written in 2006 for the SaxAssault CD 'Sax of Gold'. The first play through of the tune is stated in unison (octaves) by the soprano, alto & tenor saxophones, underpinned by several different pedal tones from the baritones & bass saxophones. The tune is then restated with the full rhythm section kicking in. Solo sections follow, with backing figures and bridge sections before a brief coda.
This tune has proved especially popular on SaxAssault gigs as an end to either first or second sets, with its infectious groove, high energy and immediate impact. It also allows space for a number of players to be featured as soloists, either over the given changes, or over one chord.
performance note;
It is recommended that you listen to the SaxAssault recording of 'Don't Shoot the Duck'. This will help you understand the groove and feel of the piece, which is the key to a good performance! The saxophones must perform with confidence when only playing with drums at the top of the chart, and also 'on cue' in the coda. Backing figures may be given 'on cue' during solos. 'Don't Shoot the Duck' could be an opportunity to feature your drummer and bassist in the one-chord 'open' section that precedes the coda.
