A commission from the Love Music Trust for the LMT Saxophone Ensemble, Estuário is a gently reflective piece that explores different colours.
Opening with the tenor and baritones saxophones playing a folk-like tune, the soprano and alto saxophones then lead us into a free time dream-like soundworld. Given pitches but not rhythms, the gently shifting soundscape provides the backdrop for a tenor saxophone improvisation, with (on cue) medieval-sounding chords provided by the other tenor saxophones and baritone saxophones.
A short and more discordant link brings us to the final section of Estuário, a scoring of the opening tenor and baritone saxophone tune, now as a release of tension for the full ensemble.
Estuário was given a world premiere performance by the LMT Saxophone Ensemble, directed by Jamie Sharp, at EurSax in Porto, Portugal, in July 2017.
