Drawing upon over twenty five years of performing and teaching, Rolf Delfos’ twelve etudes present particular musical starting points which the player can then use to create new paths for their own improvisations. Combining technique with creativity, this is a multi-purpose book that is equally beneficial to the classical saxophonist as it is to the jazz saxophonist.
‘Wholy Moly’ is a brilliant book that is written for all saxophonists.

After studying classical saxophone at The Royal Conservatory of the Hague and jazz saxophone at the Conservatory in Rotterdam, Rolf Delfos formed jazz sextet The Houdini’s with trumpeter Angelo Verploegen in 1987. They created over sixteen albums, two of which were recorded in New York at the studio of Rudy van Gelder, and had lots of success in Holland, Europe, America and Australia. In 1996 they received the Golden Nutcracker Award for their complete works. The Houdini’s initiated projects such as ‘Strange Fruit’ with the New Sinfonietta Amsterdam (for the Blue Note Label) and The Duke Ellington Project with John Adams and The Asko-Schönberg-Ensemble.
Delfos then initiated ensembles such as The Jazzinvaders, The Auratones and his own Licks and Brains Big Band, whilst contributing to hundreds of albums, television programs and collaborative projects.
Today he is busier than ever, focussing especially on his saxophone quartet Artvark. Performing its own compositions worldwide, Artvark has undertaken projects with great musicians such as Claron McFadden, Ntjam Rosie (Cameroon) and recently with the Apollo Saxophone Quartet (UK). Delfos is Tutor for Saxophone and Improvisation at the Royal Conservatory of The Hague and at the Artez Institute.
