Tjuonavagge - Andy Scott (North American Premiere) Recorded live at the North American Saxophone Alliance Region 4 Opening Concert 2019 Faulkner Performing Arts Center, University of Arkansas 14th March 2019 Gillian Blair - Alto Saxophone Nathan Mertens - Alto Saxophone Dr. Chris Knighten - Conductor University of Arkansas Saxophone Ensemble
Composed by Andy Scott and originally scored for two solo alto saxophones and saxophone ensemble, Tjuonavagge was commissioned by Selmer Paris Saxophones and given a world premiere performance at the 9th Royal Northern College of Music Saxophone Day in November 2009, with soloists Vincent David and Carl Raven.
Tjuonavagge is a u-shaped valley in Lapland in northern Sweden, one of the most familiar natural sights of the mountains there. Beautifully striking, the image is one of side by side coldness and warmth, which is mirrored in the music, at times explosive multiphonics and angular, juxtaposed with delicate quarter tones and fragile lyricism.
This version sees the two original solo alto saxophones alongside a piano reduction from Simon Parkin, and was given a world premiere by Gillian Blair (saxophone), Nathan Mertens (saxophone) and Rie Yokota (piano) at the World Saxophone Congress, Zagreb, Croatia, July 2018.
