The theme for this piece is constructed from the notes contained in the name Charlie 'Bird' Parker - C, H (B natural) A, E, B, D, A, E.
A good concert piece which lends itself well for educational workshops.
Charlie Parker was one of the greatest Jazz saxophonists of all time. Using the letters in his name was intended purely as a tribute. The piece itself doesn't contain any jazz references except perhaps in some of the harmony. A short balladic section is followed by a busy fugato. On repetition both sections become more developed. It was written originally for the English Saxophone Quartet.
