Score & parts sold separately. Parts available here
Kithara by Eileen Pakenham is an engaging and atmospheric piece for mandolin orchestra. This intermediate-level work lasts around 6½ minutes and offers a rewarding challenge for ensembles, with flowing melodies, rhythmic energy, and the warm, full sound that comes from well-written tremolo passages.
This edition, edited by Barbara Pommerenke-Steel, is based on the composer’s original handwritten manuscript. Staccato markings have been replaced with right-hand stroking indications to better reflect the intended character, while all other performance markings (dynamics, tempo, etc.) remain faithful to the original.
Notes for players:
All tremolo notes are clearly shown. Notes written under a single slur should be played with continuous tremolo. The introduction, figures A and B use tremolo unless otherwise marked. From figure C to Tempo I, use tremolo only where indicated, then return to continuous tremolo until the end. The full score is 23 pages and is available as a printed copy or instant PDF download. Individual parts are sold separately.
Kithara works beautifully for mandolin orchestras and plucked-string ensembles in the UK, US, Germany and beyond - a strong addition to any group’s concert or competition programme.
