The Portuguese saxophonist Sofia Sena approached me about writing a new piece of music that is scored for tenor saxophone and piano. Sofia is a friend and colleague who I knew initially from the brilliant FISP Saxophone Festival in Palmela, and then when she studied at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester, UK.
Sofia spoke a lot about her mother and grandmother, and I was drawn to both Sofia’s words and the book by Jung Chang, Wild Swans: Three Daughters of China, which is a family history that spans a century, recounting the lives of three female generations in China.
I aimed to make the music unexpected at times, sometimes defiant, exploring the number three in different ways musically. I also aimed for real integration between the parts, it is a Duo.

Wild Swans was given a world premiere by Sofia Sena & Daniel Garcia in Conservatori Liceu, Barcelona, as part of Sofia’s Bachelor Final Recital.
