My love and respect for both the people of Portugal, the country itself and the ever-evolving saxophone world there was initiated after an invitation from Henrique Portovedo to guest with the young musicians in Aveiro. H & I later performed my double saxophone concerto ‘Dark Rain’ at FISP (Palmela) where I met the inspirational João Pedro Silva. In 2024 I organised a tour of music conservatoires in the UK that saw Henrique & João perform and talk about life and music in Portugal. Both are dear friends and amazing musicians.
I love working with musicians of all ages and experience levels who have the passion for music, and at Festivals, concerts and workshops in Portugal I have felt inspired to write a short piece for the saxophonists in front of me. Hopefully the results are pieces that they enjoy playing and which may come together quickly!
I have taken the original saxophone quintets and quartets from Festival de Semana and created a
version that may be played by solo alto saxophone and piano, giving saxophonists who have played the original ensemble music the opportunity to feature in all of the pieces! These pieces are dedicated to the teachers that inspire, encourage and support the student
(whatever age) in the early stages of their musical lives.
