Scored for brass band (without percussion), 'Hymn to Barossa' is a re-scoring by the composer of the hymn section from 'Battle of Barossa'. This piece was commissioned and funded by Foden's Brass Band & Armagh Old Boys' Band, premiered at the RNCM Festival of Brass 2010, and recorded on the CD 'A World Within' (SP&S DOYCD276).
This new arrangement is a melancholy and melodic hymn that mid-piece features a poignant cornet solo. 'Hymn to Barossa' gradually builds, but deliberately only so far, and is a statement of controlled emotions. Andy writes "It seemed fitting to arrange the Hymn for Brass Band as we approach the 200th anniversary of the Battle of Barossa, which took place in early March 1811. It is out of respect for the men and women that give their lives to protect our country, and as the poet Byron said "Bear witness, bright Barossa, thou cast tell, whose were the sons that bravely fought and fell"."
'Hymn to Barossa' was premiered by Foden's Band, conducted by John Wallace, at Brass in Concert, November 2010, at the Sage, Gateshead.
