The Royal Northern College of Music Saxophone Orchestra commissioned Andy Scott to write Big Red for a performance in Cardiff in October 2002. The brevity of this piece belies its power and beauty, building up in waves of subtle ensemble layers. The hauntingly moving last few bars seem particularly heartfelt. Will Upton
