Soprillo sax (opt.), Sopranino sax, Soprano sax x 4, Alto sax x 7, Tenor sax x 5, Baritone sax x 4, Bass sax, Contrabass sax (opt.)(soprano, alto, tenor & baritone parts all include 1 opt easy part)
Featuring vast ranks of saxophones, Romany Beck is a ‘gypsy dance’ in which every performer has a key role to play in the piece. Soprano, alto, tenor & baritone parts all include 1 optional easy part.
Romany Beck is intended to be a ‘gypsy dance’ in which overlapping melodies and unexpected time signatures ensure that every performer has a key role to play in the piece. Although it features many memorable melodies and phrases, the work also features contemporary ideas to ensure that the combination of instruments produces different timbres throughout the piece. The repeat ad. lib. tutti bars, with growing chords dictated by the musical director ensure that every performance will be slightly different, with individuals’ interpretations adding to the texture and ambience of the music.
The original version of Romany Beck was commissioned for the 2005 Single Reed Festival in Harrogate. Featuring vast ranks of saxophones and clarinets, the work was to be the focus of the entire entourage at the festival, culminating in a finale concert performance. In 2006, Romany Beck was re-scored for Saxophone Ensemble (with optional additional parts) as a request by Andy Scott and was performed as part of the RNCM Saxophone Festival.
