Sonata for Alto Saxophone and Piano by Andy Scott is a substantial three-movement concert work lasting around 14 minutes. Originally composed for flute and piano, the composer has skilfully arranged it for alto saxophone, where it feels very natural and idiomatic.
The piece moves through dynamic grooves, lyrical passages and exciting stylistic shifts, with the finale featuring a dramatic flashback to earlier material. It offers advanced players a rewarding and versatile addition to their repertoire.
This saxophone version was premiered at Wigmore Hall in 2015 by saxophonist Anthony Brown and pianist Leo Nicholson. It has since been recorded by world-renowned saxophonist Timothy McAllister with pianist Liz Ames on the Naxos album Westland.
