Three of these four pieces by Benedetto Persichini, an Italian mandolin player and composer around the turn of the 20th Century, have been recorded by the Editor; Alison Stephens. Polcha Variata is on the CD “Music from the Novels by Louis de Bernieres” (CHAN 9780); and Arrabbiosa and Piccolina are on the CD “Con Espressione” also available from Astute Music. Il Bacio is a recent Persichini discovery by the Editor during her research on the composer.
These pieces date from a time when the mandolin was enjoyed as a “popular” instrument and much of the music written was designed to show off the player/composer’s technique. The music is light-hearted and often jocular and should be played with a sense of interpretational freedom, panache and stylistic flair.
