House Blues is based around a twelve bar blues form. As one of the most important chord progressions in Jazz music, the twelve bar blues presents a good training ground in developing improvisational skills. Players should be encouraged to explore improvising over the solo sections without rigid rules, although the supplementary chord sheets should be used to promote the familiarisation of such chords and their related scales. The second chorus presents a more challenging set of chords incorporating various common substitutions.
Articulations should be carefully observed as these will add to the stylistic authenticity of the music.
This arrangement was sponsored by Ken and Elaine Morris for the benefit of the Youth Jazz Orchestra movement in order to improve standards of improvisation. Thanks are due to Altrincham Grammar School for Boys and Astute Music for their support of this project.
