The work was commissioned by classical saxophonist Simon Haram and appears on his album Mono'Dia on John Harle's Sospiro label (SOSSH100414). Originally written for soprano saxophone, the composition has four distinct sections. In parts one and three the mood is one of quiet reflection. This contrasts dramatically with parts two and four where sadness and longing are replaced by the life-enhancing qualities of the dance.
Performance Note
The contrasts between the four sections should be highlighted. There should be a feeling of space and atmosphere in the slow sections. Here, the time should be elastic and unhurried with a great deal of rubato playing. By contrast, the fast sections must be rhythmically tight and in strict time.
