Rob Buckland is internationally recognised as one of the most distinctive and versatile saxophonists of his generation, performing throughout the UK, in Switzerland, Japan and China in a wide variety of settings, encompassing the breadth of the modern musical world. He is currently performing and recording with his Equivox Trio (with Percussionist Simone Rebello & Pianist Peter Lawson), and has recently released a new CD with this group, featuring new music by Jason Rebello, Barbara Thompson, Pat Metheny, Bob Mintzer, Barry Cockcroft & others, to follow up his highly successful solo CD Towards the Light (1998) which received critical acclaim. He regularly performs and records with a wide variety of groups including the Michael Nyman Band, Halle, RLPO, BBC Phil, Opera North and Northern Sinfonia, both throughout the UK and abroad, and can often be heard on TV and film soundtracks. He has had many concertos and solo works written for him, recently performed Sir Harrison Birtwistle’s Concerto “Panic” at the Royal Festival Hall at the composers’ invitation as part of a major Birtwistle Festival, was soloist with the China National Symphony Orchestra in their prestigious 2006 New Year concerts in Beijing, televised and broadcast to 1.5 million people, and was soloist with the Macau chamber Orchestra. He is a founder member of the Apollo Saxophone Quartet, with whom he has recorded 7 CDs, and commissioned and premiered some 80+ new works from the world’s leading composers, redefining the Saxophone Quartet medium, both in terms of repertoire and performance. In the last year, Rob has been heard performing in concerts supporting artists as diverse as Wayne Shorter, Jon Bon Jovi, Ringo Starr, the Wombats and Kiri Te Kanawa, and has recently toured as featured saxophonist with Elvis Costello.
Alongside his busy performing schedule, Rob is Professor of Saxophone at the Royal Northern College of Music, the UK’s largest and most active saxophone programme, is Co-Artistic director of the RNCM Saxophone Day, the UK’s largest annual Saxophone event and runs his own International Summer School. His compositions range from works for Saxophone Quartet and Silent Film, and Saxophone Quartet and Poet, Saxophone Orchestra, works for his Equivox Trio (Saxophone, Piano and Percussion), numerous studies, duets and quartets for the astute Music Saxophone catalogue, of which he is editor. He is currently completing a new Saxophone Tutor book for advanced players, due for release in early 2009. Rob is a solo artist and endorsee for Henri Selmer Paris saxophones.
